Uranium is a naturally occurring heavy metal that is first formed in supernovas. On Earth, it is always found in combination with other elements—in rock, soil, and water. All isotopes are radioactive and the ongoing decay of this material is believed to be the reason that the core of the Planet is molten. Protecting ourselves from the harmful effects of this decay is a challenge for humans and many other species.
